Do You Think Social Media is Good for Teenagers?

By Fai and Karin

Social media is a big part of many teens’ lives. Almost all teenagers have social media to connect with other people. Social media can bring many benefits to its users in various aspects of life.

From now on, social media becomes a precious platform to grow and glow in public. First of all, being socially connected is very important for the psychological development, especially we all are in the pandemic era who hardly not allowed to do the things that we suppose to do. On the plus side, platforms like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat can be lifesavers for teens who feel isolated. In addition, social media helped teens feel more connected and not as lonely during the pandemic.

For the most part, teens tend to use social media platforms to improve their trace. Even more, they use this platform to create a business, such as our alumnus in SMAN 3 Bandung, kang Ehan, he made kind of a milo cubes and earned about 1.2 million rupiah in a month. He used social media to publish the product. From that, people may know about him and what he had earned from using social media platforms, maybe some of them feel attracted to do the same things, and it could create a good atmosphere in media social.

Although social media can be a place for a teenager to grow, social media can also cause a feeling of insecurity in its users, because what is posted on social media is usually things like fun life, happiness, and so on without showing the slightest problem or daily struggle in their life. So that many users tend to compare their lives with someone’s life on social media, and there is also a tendency to make ourselves the greatest in order to show the best life on social media, regardless of the existing boundaries. As for social media, which has such rapid development, trends often appear that are not good enough to follow, and are difficult to filter out so that anyone, including teenagers, can follow.

To summarize, we think that social media could be pretty dangerous for ourselves, but it could be a diamond in the rough for growing up as a teengers. So we have to control ourselves on these big platforms.

Recommendation Letter

Dear Scholarship Selection Committee,

I’m thrilled to recommend Raden Roro Shaffana Almadea Putriandra for the AFPHM John Snow Scholarship. I taught Shaffana’s Biology and Medical Sciences classes, and I also am the advisor for the Senior High School 3 Bandung. I’ve known Shaffana for three years, and I’ve seen her use intelligence, hard work, and extremely diligent. I would highly recommend her for this scholarship.

I first met Shaffana when she was a student of 10th grade. From the first day of class, Shaffana impressed me amazingly with her ambitions to be a doctor. I thought that she just like the other student who dreamed about being a doctor, but she was different. Her ambitions formed herself strongly. She is unique.

She showed great interest in every course and her passion for the field of science is evident. She is also a hard worker. Although she has trouble with her respiration system that make her hard to do a lot of activities, which is Senior High School do that so, she always do the best for her work, and I as her teacher always satisfied with her job. Shaffana got along well with everyone. She is caring, respectful, sympathy, and patient to everyone. No doubt if soon, Shaffana become a good doctor.

Shaffana is an excellent student in the class. She is the top 7 students of the highest score in her class. She’s very skilled at being able to apply the theory with the activities in her daily life, especially in Medical case, so she easily able to solve the problem about that. Shaffana has been an active student also. She is very diligent in every subject. She never left the task behind or even submit on the deadline, she always takes the responsibility of her tasks.

Her hard work and effort will get her very far in life and there is no doubt in my mind that she will succeed. She always has her own goals and destination. She always able to controlled and organizer her life properly. I believe Shaffana would be an extremely deserving recipient of this award and that you can be certain she’d make the most of it, the way he has made the most of all opportunities she has had.

Kindness from Deutschland: Nico’s Weg

Karinafa 2.30 am

Nico’s leg was hurt while he was playing football

The stigma of “Don’t trust stranger” may be broken by Peter Limbourg’s Deutch Learning Program series, Nico’s Weg, which was released on April 8, 2019 on Youtube platform. Lisa Brunner (Charley Ann Schmutzler) and her nephew (called Emma in the movie) as the extra cast prove that not all stranger who help us always have bad intentions like in Ryoung & Lee Luda’s comic titled killstagram or Bong Joon-ho’s successful film, Parasite. Lisa and Emma help the main cast as a tourist from Spain, Seville named Nico (Florian Wünsche). He not very fluent speak Deutsch and unfortunately lost his bag complete with his passport and mobile phone on the first day he set foot in Panzer Country.

His bag was carried away by a taxi which made Nico fall into a big trouble because inside his bag, which bearing the bicycle logo, contains the address of his aunt’s house, which was his destination for going to Deutschland. But thanks to Lisa and Emma’s help, Nico didn’t become a homeless in a foreign country.

Not only help find Nico’s bag, Lisa, who is an English and Deutsch teacher, also provides various facilities that are really needed for him: clothes, foods, and home. Lisa’s wide relations also help Nico for solving his problem. Until one day, Lisa’s father who is a policeman and Lisa’s friend, Max, who turns out a friend of Nico’s aunt, Yara, who exactly lives in Adalbert-Stifter-Straße make it easier for Nico to find his bag and his lovely aunt in Germany.

However, instead of looking for his aunt, it turns out that Nico flies to Germany to stay away from his family. In his conversation with Max at the place where Lisa was interviewed, Nico said that he was pushed to study by his father, whereas he didn’t want to, so he chose to stay away as far as he could.

55:25 – My Fav Scene

“I don’t want to study anymore, never again, I hate it”

“But?”

“But my parents want that. My father always says I have to go to college”

“Is that why you are in Germany?”

“I want to get away from home. Far away!”

The ending of this film is Nico finally meet the person who he has been looking for in Germany, Yara.

However, what will Nico do in Germany afterward?

Maybe the answer to this hanging puzzle will not be answered in the A1 series because the Deutsch Welle Germans Course produced 3 series of Nico’s weg film from A1 until B1 with 19 units per level and 4 parts per unit. Each unit consists of a short 1-2 minutes clip of story followed by many exercises (ranging from 9 to 15 pages). -Sources from reddit-

About Nico’s Weg

This German language learning film, which is set in the country itself can be said to be a visual-audio dictionary for beginners. Starring actors who are quite visible in public established a strong magnetic fields to spread the special charm of this film, especially for teenagers. The main character, Florian Wünsche, is a German actor and well known for his role as Manuel Siewert in the children soap opera Schloss Einstein. The extra cast, Charley Ann Schmutzler or as known as Lisa Brunner is a contestant in The Voice-Blind Audition 2014, actress, writer, and director, known for Weg (2014), Leroy (2007), and F Berlin (2016). And the other actors like Max, Emma, Sebastian, etc also makes this film more colorful.

Their acting for this film also seems natural. They also managed to bring out very smooth dialogues and using a simple language. Clear articulation of pronouncing Deutsch’s words make the viewer less confused to learn the meaning of the words and also completely support them to understand the story , indeed.

Other than that, this film make the viewer memorize vocabulary indirectly with a lot of repetitions of basic sentences for beginners such as: Guten Morgen, Entschuldigung, Tschuss, Auf Wiedersehen, Kein Problem, etc. This repetitions method can also make it easier for them to apply this basic learning.

German Culture: drinkking beer at informal events
German Culture: dressed up during winter/spring

Not only educate about the subject like: Possessive Pronomen, Genus / Artikle, Bestimmter und Umbestimmter, Negation Phrases, Zahlen, Berufe, Alphabet, etc. But also educate about the culture (Die Trinkkultur) such as: dressed up during winter or spring seasons, manners when we meet the other people (Like: don’t ask age, occupation, or things that shouldn’t be asked), respecting foreigners who can speak Deutsch even though they are not fluent enough, drinkking beer at informal events, and drink sparkling water instead of plain water to accompany daily activities.

A professional cinematography and the quality of sound makes this film totally memorable as a serious designed and detailed film. Not only stop on this step, DW’s company also provides the follow-up after the viewer have watched the film. This can be accessed at learngerman.dw.com. — this website is a platform for practicing Deutsch after watched Nico’s Weg series —

“The exercises are pretty comprehensive, testing your grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, and writing. You are then grade and every unit ends with a vocabulary overview. Most also feature a grammar overview and some information about the German culture (usually tying into that episode’s theme). ” r / German from reddit.

However, viewed from an entertainment point, this film still lacks focus in presenting the storyline. The storyline that is arranged is still fragmented and jumps from scene to scene so that the film seems like only want to present new vocabulary or subject in German without following the storyline. Other than that, there are also some unrealistic elements such as Nico, a Spanish who is fluent in German for a few days, while Salma (Yeliz Simsek) who came from Syria, Damascus have to spent a year to be able fluent speake German by Lisa’s guidance. However, returning to the starting point that this film is intended for learning, so those things are very understandable. Instead, seeing that there are more good things inside, makes this film deserve to be given recognition as the most amusingly teaching method of all the time.

Fav Words

The word “Kein Problem” will probably be my favorite word that I will say every day. The interesting form and unique pronunciation have attracted me with this simple sentence. Apart from that, “No Problem” is the word I need lately to answer a million problems.

Entschuldigung” is ranked second in my favorite words after the word means “No Problem”. The word “Entschuldigung” is a pretty attractive for me because it sounds unique when we pronounce it. Apart from that, “Excuse me” is a simple word to show politeness.

Fav Actor

Charley Ann Schmutzler

My favorite actor is Charley Ann Schmutzler. This woman who was born on June 22, 1993 has her own charm in her role as Lisa Brunner. Her stunning acting makes this movie as if it is her daily life. Her position as an aunt also impresses her with her responsibility, compassion and concern for Emma, Nico, and their friends. Her openness to new people also breaks the stigma that stranger do not always play the role of criminals.

I would highly recommend Nico’s Weg if you are a beginners in learning German. It will be very easy to understand, learn, and analyze with this learning film. Also it won’t make you bored, instead you will be entertained and educated at the same time. Apart from that, this film also doesn’t contain SARA or violence, everything is controlled in a beautiful plot.

To All the things that I’ve dreamed before: See you soon!

I’m Karina and I have a full of ambitions to make my dream come true,

Opening with the story of little me. I was born from amazing mom and dad in the world. No television after 6 pm and have to choose every decision and take the risk by myself are 1/10 rules that I’ve grew with. From that I was dreaming about: I must have my own television and choose every single stuff that I want without thinking about it before.

Move on from Karin junior’s dream, I entered elementary school. There, I was quite fame because I usually go forward in front of the class to answer my teacher’s question or do some presentation with my over-power system in my body. I don’t even able to controlled it, really. Even my mom told me, that I usually do my homework after school without take off my shoes. So, it means every day the floor got dirty cause my “homework”. So, my dream was: I want to have vacuum cleaner who able to clean the floor by himself.

Arrived in 5th grade, I want to be a lecturer as my father cause I loved to teach my friends with my own way -over power system- also my teacher supported me to become a lecture until one day I was nicknamed SENA, as known as dosen Karina. To be honest, I feel little bit cringe right now, lol. So, as you can guess, I was dreaming to: become SENA.

I passed elementary school with flying colours and entered junior high school with my final exam score. And in this period, I found my exact dream. One day, my grandfather was sick cause lymph gland who has been exist for a long time. Yea, my grandfather didn’t tell me and my big family about that. I’ve been only looked for him once because he was hospitalized in the other city so it hard for me who still a student to see him. And in those “one day” I looked up for him, he was saying to me

“Come here, doctor”.

I was stuck, I want to cried, hard for me to step and come towards him. Because I know, it is time to him to say goodbye, by not seeing me become a doctor.

All I want is to make my little family happy, especially my grandfather because I know he was a good man. Even I couldn’t describe him, because all of things that he has done is all good. Died with syahadat, sleep for a long time with smile and shiny face, and close his eyes peacefully.

And from that moment, I know what I have supposed to be,

My parents never make a decision for my future, but I have to search my own decision and choose the right things that I can take the risk from that. And I know, I completely know what I have to study for, what I have to hard work for, what is my goal, how my future is. And my answer is : I want to be a doctor.

Like water flows in the peace river, become a doctor is also flow in my soul, set in my mind, and stuck in my heart. Big support from my family throw me to alien’s world. Yea, me and my sister usually called “Aliens” for those who just study-study-study like study is only things to do. And fact is, I’m the one of them.

I’d rather to stay 24 hours in my room, locked the door, and do all of the things there -study homework sleep- I rarely come over to the living room or step on to the environment outside, until I literally don’t know that there is Cambodia flowers -which is I loved them so much- in my home.

Until I realize, it’s not right.

It’s totally not right.

And I was awakened by my sister, she told me that I have to join some organization and do some vacation to set up back my mind. Well, I haven’t reason to not do that and it’s not negative things also, so I came in.

See the social-public activities make me know how cruel this world for human. Hungry kids, poor family, tramps are close to us. Hard to me to open my eyes, to see how they need us to help them.

I want

Become a rich-independent-young doctor who can help human outside the world with my own money, with my over-power system in my body, with my heart, with my strength, with all of the things that I can do. I just want to step this way.

Not much achievements that I’ve earned until today. Biology national science Olympiad rank 11 in junior high school, chemistry quark science Olympiad in senior high school (didn’t pass), twice won the 1st place and once 2nd place read a poem, also 1st place to write a poem, pictures of the month at generation global, and also me and my friend are doing some essay competition. Not for be overproud, all of those things just to make me sure and give me some support to reach my dreams. Cause I know, you, who’s reading this blog have more a lot of achievement in your life, not only in academic, not only in talent, but in all of the things you can do is your achievements. You are more than that, trust me.

So, I believe in one thing, no one born fool, no one born stupid. Everyone has their own passion and their own talent. We can’t judge them if we just see with one side.

This is me and my dreams, I hope it come true, I also want your dream come true, I want we are together to make our dream flying to the top, see them decorate the sky, and feel them with peace.

Karina 2020,

See you soon, doctor.

Offers and Suggestions Dialogue – Idul Adha Program

On the group call in the middle of the meeting

24/01/2020

A: y’all know that in the first session we talk about the distribution of the meat to the citizens around our school. So now we’ll head to the second session who talks about organizing our plan. As we discussed yesterday, we have two plans that we’ll use to conduct this event.  There’s Plan A that we will directly jump to the field in the middle of this pandemic and Plan B that we will surrender the infaq and also the animal to some institution that has already been decided before. So, what shall we choose?

B: I guess, we might go to Plan A. Because we don’t have a thick relationship with them. We just know that they offer service to organize the qurban from the infaq that we collect and give them. I worry about that. It doesn’t mean I have suudzon feeling, but we collect the money from the student’s parents, from the teacher, even from us as a student. We don’t want to make them disappoint right?

C: But I’m not sure about that B. We need Personal Protective Equipment according to the protocol that the government already announced to us. Also, the meat that’ll be distributed has to use some difficult protocols. Other than that, getting our parent’s permit is quite hard because they’ll worry about us.

D: I don’t know. Personal Protective Equipment is just not about white suits with complex attribute things. We’d better find Personal Protective Equipment such as a mask, gloves, boot, and also long-sleeved clothes because those things are also Personal Protective Equipment.

B: Sounds great D! I’m up for it. Would you like to buy a mask, gloves, boots, and also long-sleeved clothes from my aunty company because she produces such things? I can contact her later if you guys agree.

C: Well, It’s a good offering. Let’s do that.

E: But guys, I suggest that we still plan for Plan B because no one knows what will happen on the day of the event right?

A: Yeah fine, I’m in.

D: So, we could work from now on right? Let’s create a professional team!

All: Let’s do that!
